Red car with open hood being serviced, connected by blue and red hoses to a yellow machine with pressure gauges, inside a garage.

Do you know how to safely jump start another Portland, TX driver’s car? We can help you with that in today’s post from Al Willeford Chevrolet. First, stay alert. Jumping a car requires smart decisions while handling cables that conduct electricity.

With your battery near the other cars’, ensure that both ignition switches are in their OFF positions and that each car is in Park or Neutral with the parking brake engaged. You can now connect your positive jumper cable to the receiving car’s positive battery terminal. Clamp the other end of this cable to your battery’s positive terminal and connect your negative cable to your negative terminal.

The last clamp can throw sparks. Clamp it on a metal piece of the other car’s engine block and far from its battery. Turn on your car. After a short wait, start the drained car. You may need multiple attempts. If you cannot start the other car, it needs repairs or a new battery.
